Primer

Tarot cards are fascinating. They are colorful little signs of our hopes and fears. I have been reading them for fun since I was a teen and for some profit recently. I have several decks of cards. Each uses their own iconography to display the situations and emotions we humans populate. You might call them archetypal. In fact, I think Carl Jung did.

There are four different suits of cards. The wand suit represents energy/fire moving in and out of you. It gets you going and growing. The swords represent something of an opposite. They are logical, using power to make seemingly rational decisions. I appreciate their logic and argument. However, they also seem too cold to me; they are also a warning about following logic to the ultimate end. A dead end, that is. No matter what they say, human beings are not acting logically. To understand them use emotions and then look at the rational thought people present. Cups is a suit of love and relationships. It can be about romantic love, family, friends. Finally, pentacles revolve around some kind of work, be it paid work, a problem needing resolution, or some other project. It could mean working on a relationship. That would depend on the context of these cards with others.

The others cards in tarot decks are called the Major Arcana. These cards represent powerful forces and energies. I’m not going over all of them but will give you an example, the Star card. It reminds me of Jesus’ talk about not putting your light under a basket as it will not shine and be useful, (Never mind it might burn the basket). Let it out and let it shine. Let people see your light. I feel the Star card is a sign you have to stop hiding, be it hiding from your past or hiding your love and other emotions.

Now as to the truth of Tarot’s abilities to enlighten a situation or forecast the future, I am not very metaphysical about it. I have made some eerily accurate   prognostications. I have also missed things at times. You have to be able to really see the person in front of you and trust your own reactions to them. You have to understand yourself to understand others. Or at least try.   It’s not the easiest task. But I think it is a worthy task.
